Regulation is split: CREG oversees transmission and wholesale prices, while each region's regulator oversees local networks and retail. Electricity is traded on day-ahead and intraday exchanges coupled across the EU, so prices are set by the whole European market. Households can switch supplier.
Elia owns and operates the high-voltage grid; distribution belongs to regional operators such as Fluvius (Flanders), ORES and RESA (Wallonia) and Sibelga (Brussels).
Part of the synchronous grid of Continental Europe, the largest interconnected grid in the world by customers, coordinated by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity.
What does “Liberalised market” mean?
Generators sell into a wholesale market, an independent operator runs the transmission grid, and households can choose their electricity supplier. Networks stay regulated monopolies because building parallel power lines makes no sense.
