Electricity generation in the United States
Annual electricity production, fuel mix and historical observations for United States, with links to its grid operators, electricity market and power stations.
Reference year: 2024. Published snapshot, not live output. Energy is reported in terawatt-hours (TWh).
How much electricity does United States produce?
United States reported 4,391 TWh of domestic electricity generation in 2024. Among the reported source categories, gas produced the most electricity: 1,869.9 TWh.

Electricity mix 2024
Annual generation by source · terawatt-hours (TWh)
Missing categories are labelled “No data”. Rounding can cause small differences from the reported total.
Renewable share uses domestic generation as its denominator. Low-carbon generation includes renewables and nuclear; nuclear is not renewable. Missing fuel categories remain “No data”, and rounded source values need not sum exactly to the reported total.
Generation is not consumption or installed capacity
The source separately reports electricity demand of 4,404.8 TWh for 2024. Domestic generation is not electricity consumed after trade and losses. The demand series is a separate source measure, not a calculated import balance. Power-plant ratings in megawatts (MW) measure capacity; annual production in TWh measures energy.

United States: a varied generation mix with different gas-plant duties
Reporting scope: 2024 national mix; EIA technology explanation published February 2024.
Large renewable fleets coexist with gas and nuclear
In the IEA's 2024 comparison, gas supplies over 40% of US electricity, alongside renewables, nuclear and coal. A large renewable installation count can coexist with gas producing the most energy: counts and output answer different questions.

A Gas label does not identify the cycle
EIA distinguishes combined-cycle turbines, simple-cycle turbines, steam turbines and internal combustion engines in the US gas fleet. Their efficiency and dispatch roles differ. Inspect the original record before treating every gas station as the combined-cycle configuration illustrated in the technology guide.
