Sourced engineering details

SMA's Fontvieille waste-to-energy plant. Electrical generation, electricity sold and district thermal services are separate quantities.

Installed or rated capacity (MW), generator apparent power (MVA) and annual electricity generation (MWh/GWh) describe different quantities. None is live output. No live telemetry is connected to this profile.

Generator / unit ratings
Alternator: 2,600 kW (2.6 MW), 1,500 rpmReported source record

Source period: Undated SMA technical-characteristics page

This is the operator's electrical rated power. Generator MVA, power factor and terminal voltage are not supplied. Boiler flow and burner heat input must not be added to this MW rating.

Grid connection voltage
Not reported in the checked sourcesUnconfirmed plant-specific value

Source period: Undated SMA plant page; IMSEE 2026 energy table

SMA identifies SMEG's public network as the destination for surplus electricity, but does not specify the plant's connection voltage. A general Monaco network voltage would not establish this plant's connection point.

Turbine type
Steam turbo-alternator; turbine model and subtype not reportedReported source record

Source period: SMA technical page; IMSEE 2026 table and turbo-alternator footnote

The sources describe steam recovery and a turbo-alternator. They do not establish a turbine manufacturer, model or extraction/back-pressure/condensing configuration; the listed aerocondenser is not sufficient to infer the turbine subtype.

Annual electricity generation
9,470.4 MWh (9.4704 GWh) generated in 2025Reported source record

Source period: Calendar year 2025; Monaco en chiffres, 2026 edition, p. 35

The SMA-sourced table reports 9,470,400 kWh generated and, separately, 3,604,072 kWh sold to SMEG (3,604.072 MWh). Units here follow the explicit kWh row labels despite the table's inconsistent general MWh footer. Generated electricity is not net export; subtracting sales does not establish self-consumption because the plant also buys electricity.

Operating principle
Waste combustion produces steam for electricity and district heating/coolingReported source record

Source period: Undated SMA operating-process page

Two furnace-boiler lines recover combustion heat. Electricity supplies plant loads, with surplus sold to SMEG; steam also serves a separate heating/cooling plant. Thermal delivery and electricity are not interchangeable electrical-output totals.

Illustrative energy paths

Teaching illustration — not an as-built plant diagram. This editorial diagram explains the sourced operating principle above. It is not to scale and does not show actual wiring, equipment locations, protection settings or an approved installation design.

Electrical-energy path

  1. Waste combustion
  2. Boilers → steam
  3. Turbo-alternator
  4. Plant loads + SMEG sales

District-energy path

  1. Recovered steam
  2. Heating / cooling plant
  3. District heat + cooling

The two energy services are simplified teaching paths, not a steam balance, turbine-extraction diagram or approved process layout.

Electricity, heat and cooling

SMA describes a waste-incineration plant in Fontvieille commissioned in 1980. Steam supports electricity production and urban heating and cooling. Electricity serves the plant itself; surplus enters the public network operated by SMEG. This is a cogeneration facility, rather than a plant whose only product is electricity. SMA: waste-to-energy process.

Which rating is used

The operator lists two furnace-boiler lines and an alternator rated at 2,600 kW at 1,500 rpm. The atlas converts that electrical rating to 2.6 MW. Burner heat input, waste throughput and steam flow are different quantities; none is an additional electrical capacity. The rating does not report present output, annual generation or net export. SMA: technical characteristics.

Location and interpretation limits

The existing inventory uses the centroid of the OpenStreetMap building outline tagged Incinérateur SMA (way 836387059, ODbL) in Fontvieille. This pin represents the building, not a surveyed site boundary.

A representative coordinate is not a surveyed boundary or a grid connection diagram. Rated MW is not real-time output. Historical annual generation is separately dated; this profile does not verify current dispatch or availability.
