Gas, coal, solar, nuclear and hydro supply power. JEPX runs the exchange; households have been able to choose a supplier since 2016. Eastern Japan runs at 50 Hz and western Japan at 60 Hz.

What does “Liberalised market” mean?
Generators sell into a wholesale market, an independent operator runs the transmission grid, and households can choose their electricity supplier. Networks stay regulated monopolies because building parallel power lines makes no sense.
Japan has ten general transmission and distribution companies. TEPCO is a regional example; OCCTO coordinates across regions. This is not a complete list of Japan's network operators.
