Electricity generation in Denmark

Annual electricity production, fuel mix and historical observations for Denmark, with links to its grid operators, electricity market and power stations.

Reference year: 2024. Published snapshot, not live output. Energy is reported in terawatt-hours (TWh).

How much electricity does Denmark produce?

Denmark reported 35.1 TWh of domestic electricity generation in 2024. Among the reported source categories, wind produced the most electricity: 20.4 TWh.

Electricity generated35.1 TWh
Renewable share89.2%
Low-carbon share89.2%
Carbon intensity131.8 gCO₂e/kWh

Missing categories are labelled “No data”. Rounding can cause small differences from the reported total.

Renewable share uses domestic generation as its denominator. Low-carbon generation includes renewables and nuclear; nuclear is not renewable. Missing fuel categories remain “No data”, and rounded source values need not sum exactly to the reported total.

Generation is not consumption or installed capacity

The source separately reports electricity demand of 38.8 TWh for 2024. Domestic generation is not electricity consumed after trade and losses. The demand series is a separate source measure, not a calculated import balance. Power-plant ratings in megawatts (MW) measure capacity; annual production in TWh measures energy.

Searching for “energy production in Denmark”? This profile answers the electricity part of that question. Transport fuels, heat and total primary-energy production are outside this dataset.

Every row retains its own reporting year. 2024 remains the common-year comparison even where a newer observation exists. Missing observations are not interpolated.

THE ELECTRICITY SYSTEM IN CONTEXT

Denmark: wind, combined heat and power, and cross-border balancing

Reporting scope: Energy in Denmark 2024 (report version available September 2026).

Electricity installations also serve heat demand

The Danish Energy Agency's 2024 report describes wind's growing role in domestic electricity supply and distinguishes large combined heat and power units from wind, solar and other producer types. For a thermal installation, check whether the source describes electricity-only generation or joint electricity and district-heat production.

Trade links Nordic and continental markets

The same report explains Denmark's role as a transit country between Nordic and continental European power markets. Domestic renewable generation, imports, exports and consumption are separate quantities. Counting Danish wind records cannot show the electricity mix consumed at a particular time.
