Electricity generation in the United Kingdom

Annual electricity production, fuel mix and historical observations for United Kingdom, with links to its grid operators, electricity market and power stations.

Reference year: 2024. Published snapshot, not live output. Energy is reported in terawatt-hours (TWh).

How much electricity does United Kingdom produce?

United Kingdom reported 284.2 TWh of domestic electricity generation in 2024. Among the reported source categories, gas produced the most electricity: 86.3 TWh.

Missing categories are labelled “No data”. Rounding can cause small differences from the reported total.

Renewable share uses domestic generation as its denominator. Low-carbon generation includes renewables and nuclear; nuclear is not renewable. Missing fuel categories remain “No data”, and rounded source values need not sum exactly to the reported total.

Generation is not consumption or installed capacity

The source separately reports electricity demand of 317.4 TWh for 2024. Domestic generation is not electricity consumed after trade and losses. The demand series is a separate source measure, not a calculated import balance. Power-plant ratings in megawatts (MW) measure capacity; annual production in TWh measures energy.

Searching for “energy production in United Kingdom”? This profile answers the electricity part of that question. Transport fuels, heat and total primary-energy production are outside this dataset.

Every row retains its own reporting year. 2024 remains the common-year comparison even where a newer observation exists. Missing observations are not interpolated.

THE ELECTRICITY SYSTEM IN CONTEXT

United Kingdom: wind growth, gas generation and changing plant status

Reporting scope: 2024 UK generation; Great Britain operator scope.

A historical list is not today's generating fleet

DUKES 2025 reports that renewables supplied 50.4% of UK electricity generation in 2024, while gas remained the largest individual fuel. It also records the closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar in September 2024, ending UK coal-fired power generation. A coal station retained in a historical inventory is not evidence that it is still generating.

UK statistics and Great Britain operation differ

NESO identifies its system-operator remit as Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Do not assume a UK-wide generation statistic has the same geographic scope as a Great Britain operational dashboard. Check the separate Northern Ireland organisations in the grid directory when following records there.
